- INTRODUCTION
-
- VGA COLORING BOOK (VCB) is a computer coloring book. It allows children to use
- over 3000 colors and patterns to color pictures on the computer. Children, age
- 3 and up, will enjoy bringing the pictures to life with color. VCB teaches
- eye-hand coordination and encourages artistic expression.
-
- VCB is very easy to use. We have been told by registered users that VCB is one
- of the few programs that their 3 year old children can actually use alone.
- Registered users also report that the only problem their kids have is getting
- the parents and grandparents to stop using VCB. VCB is very easy for young
- children to use since most of the common commands have picture icons which can
- be easily identified.
-
- VGA COLORING BOOK is a great program to use to introduce the computer to your
- children. They will have so much fun, they won't even realize that they are
- learning basic computer skills.
-
- VCB runs in the VGA high resolution (640 x 480) 16 color mode to provide
- beautifully detailed pictures and hundreds of vivid colors (produced by mixing
- the 16 screen colors).
-
- We are confident that VGA COLORING BOOK will provide many happy hours of
- entertainment for the entire family.
-
- Please become a registered user. Be sure to write any questions or suggestions
- you might have on the back of your order form so that we can continue to improve
- the program in the ways that you want most.

- INSTALLATION AND GETTING STARTED
-
- Before attempting to use the VGA COLORING BOOK program, please make a backup
- copy of the VGA COLORING BOOK diskette(s). Consult your DOS manual for
- instructions on performing this procedure.
-
- In order to run VGA COLORING BOOK you must have all the necessary files in a
- single directory on your hard drive or on the same diskette. The files take
- less than 500K so they will fit on any size diskette except a 360K 5.25 inch
- diskette. The necessary files are listed below:
- VCB.EXE, VCB.DOC, VCBIMAGE.GXL, VCBPRINT.GXL, VCBFONTS.GXL,
- VCBPIC0.GXL, VCBPIC0.CDT, VCBSETUP.DAT, VCB.PIF, VCB.ICO.
-
- The mouse driver software must be loaded before you start VCB. Refer to your
- mouse documentation for information on performing this task. NOTE: Windows has
- its own built in mouse drivers. YOU MUST RUN THE DOS MOUSE DRIVER FOR USE WITH
- THIS PROGRAM.
-
- To run the program, simply set the current disk drive and the current directory
- to the disk and directory that contain the VGA COLORING BOOK files. Then type
- VCB and Enter.
-
- Using VCB with Windows -
- VCB can be executed as a full screen DOS application from Windows 3.1. A
- Windows 3.1 icon (VCB.ICO) and a PIF file (VCB.PIF) have been included as part
- of the Shareware version. To install VCB as a program item in the Windows
- environment you must perform the following steps. First, while in the
- Program Manager, click the mouse button in the title area of the program group
- (Window) in which you would like to install VCB. Then select "New" from the
- "File" menu in Program Manager. A dialog box will appear on the screen.
- Indicate that you want to create a New Program Item and then click on "Ok". The
- Program Item Properties dialog box will open and you should enter: "VGA
- Coloring Book" in the Description text box, drive+directory+VCB.PIF in the
- Command Line text box (example: C:\VCB\VCB.PIF the drive and directory that you
- enter should be the place where the VCB files are located), and the
- drive+directory in the Working Directory text box (example: C:\VCB). Next
- click on the "Change Icon" button. A dialog box will open that says no icons
- are available for the specified file. Click on the "Ok" button. A new window
- will open to let you select a standard icon. Click on the "Browse..." button.
- The Browse dialog box will open. Use the directory controls to select the
- directory that contains the VCB files (example: C:\VCB). then select the
- VCB.ICO file with the filename controls. Now click the "Ok" button. That will
- return you to the Change Icon dialog box and VCB.ICO will be shown selected.
- Click on the "Ok" button and you will be back in the Program Item Properties
- dialog box with the VCB icon shown in the lower left corner. Click on the "Ok"
- button and the new program item will be put into your group. To execute VCB
- from the Windows Program Manager, simply double click on the VCB icon.
-
- After the program is loaded, a title page will appear and then a few Shareware
- information screens. Press any key or click a mouse button to move through
- these pages, after you have read them of course. When the last page has been
- read, press any key or click a mouse button and the program will begin.
-
-
-
-
- 5
- USING VGA COLORING BOOK
-
- VGA COLORING BOOK is very easy to use.
-
- After starting the program, VGA COLORING BOOK will ask you to enter your name.
- Please see the description of the NAME command for more information. After
- selecting a name, a window will open that allows you to select which picture you
- would like to color. A small version of each picture will be displayed on its
- own command button. There will also be command buttons that allow you to scroll
- through the available pictures. The scrolling command buttons should not be
- needed with the Shareware version since it will work with only the six pictures
- that come with the program. Please see the description of the PICTURE command
- for more information. When you have selected a picture, the picture selection
- window will disappear and the picture and color palette will be displayed. If
- this picture has been previously colored, the program will use the coloring data
- (stored in the coloring data file) to recolor the picture. You may then start
- coloring or recoloring the picture.
-
- SHORTCUT KEYS
-
- In general, all command buttons may be invoked by pressing the key that
- corresponds to the letter that is underlined on the button. When you are
- coloring, you may invoke any of the Menu Commands (Erase, Recolor, etc.) by
- pressing the desired function's shortcut key. This will have the same effect as
- clicking on the MENU command button and then clicking on the desired function's
- command button in the Menu Command Window.
-
- The following list describes the shortcut keys that may be used when you are not
- entering menu commands. The keys that invoke functions from the Menu Command
- Window may be used even if the Menu Command Window is not currently active.
-
- M This key will display the Menu command buttons.
- O This key will invoke the OOPS function.
- E This key will invoke the ERASE command.
- R This key will invoke the RECOLOR command.
- P This key will invoke the PICTURE command.
- G This key will invoke the GET COLOR command.
- N This key will invoke the NAME command.
- T This key will invoke the PRINT command.
- S This key will invoke the STOP command.
- [CURSOR UP] This key will change to the next higher palette.
- [CURSOR DOWN] This key will change to the next lower palette.
-
- The VCB screen consists of two main sections. The top part of the screen
- contains the color palette and a few command buttons. The bottom part displays
- the picture to color.
-
- SELECTING THE ACTIVE COLOR PALETTE
-
- The Color Palette displays 120 colors, each in its own small box. You can
- choose to display any one of 32 sets of colors and patterns. To the right of
- the Color Palette, near the upper right hand corner of the screen, there are
- three palette selection buttons. Two of them have arrow icons, one up and one
- down. These buttons will increment or decrement the current palette number. The
- button between them with the painter's palette icon will allow you to directly
-
- 6
- choose which palette is displayed. When it is clicked, the upper part of the
- screen will change and give you 32 command buttons. Each button will be colored
- using the pattern it represents. These patterns are made from the colors black
- and white just to give you an idea of the pattern used. Click the desired
- pattern's command button and the color palette will be redisplayed. You should
- display all of the palettes to familiarize yourself with the available colors.
-
- SELECTING THE ACTIVE CRAYON COLOR
-
- Clicking the left mouse button on the desired color in the active color palette
- will make that color the active crayon color. The active crayon color is
- indicated by a white outline around the selected color's box in the active color
- palette display. The crayon shaped mouse cursor will also change to indicate
- the color you have selected.
-
- COLORING THE PICTURE
-
- Once you have selected the desired color, you can then "color" an area of the
- picture. To color an area, simply move the mouse cursor to point at the desired
- area and click the left mouse button. You may color over an area that has
- already been colored. If the mouse cursor is pointing at the outline of an area
- (the black lines making up the picture) when the left button is clicked, then
- you will hear the error sound and no coloring will be done. Each time you color
- an area the "color command" is added to the list in memory. Eventually, this
- list may become full if you color a lot of areas that have already been colored.
- Please see the description of the RECOLOR command for information about this
- situation.
-
- ENTERING AND EDITING TEXT STRINGS
-
- When it is necessary for you to enter or edit a text string, the following
- special editing keys may be used:
-
- <Home> Go to the beginning of the string
- <End> Go to the end of the string
- <Del> Delete the character at the text cursor
- <BACKSPACE> Delete the character to the left of the text cursor
- <Ins> Toggles the insert state
- <left arrow> Move the text cursor one character to the left
- <right arrow> Move the text cursor one character to the right
- <ENTER> Enter the string and return
-
- EASY MODE
-
- VCB may be placed into an EASY MODE. This mode is very useful for young
- children. When in this mode one of the harder commands will not be available.
- The PRINT command will not available. To put VCB into Easy Mode hold the <CTRL>
- key and press the <E> key on the keyboard. A window will open displaying the
- status of Easy Mode. Click on the Ok button or press the "O" key to remove this
- window. To take VCB out of Easy Mode, press the same key (<CTRL>-<E>). Note
- that this selection may only be made when you are not entering Menu Commands.
-
-
-
-
-
- 7
- OOPS
-
- As you color the picture, VCB remembers how you have colored it. It keeps a
- list of "color commands" in memory. Clicking the left mouse button on the OOPS
- command button will undo the last color command. This is useful if you
- accidentally color an area that was previously colored. Clicking on the OOPS
- command button will restore the area to its previous color. You may use the
- OOPS command any number of times in a row. It will always undo the last color
- command on the list and then remove that command from the list. If the list is
- empty, then you will hear the error sound and no action will be performed.
-
- MENU
-
- Clicking the left mouse button on the MENU command button will cause the Menu
- Command Window to be displayed. The Menu Command Window contains eight command
- buttons. The use of each command button is explained below. The MENU command may
- be cancelled by pressing the <ESC> key or by clicking the left mouse button on
- the CANCEL command button, or by pressing the "C" key.
-
- THE MENU COMMANDS
-
- ERASE
-
- Click the left mouse button on the ERASE command button if you want to erase the
- colors from your picture. When this command is selected, you will be asked: "Do
- you really want to erase the picture?". If you want to continue with the erasure
- then click the left mouse button on the YES command button. Click the left mouse
- button on the NO command button to abort the erase command. The keys <Y> and <N>
- may be used to indicate a Yes or No response.
-
- RECOLOR
-
- Click the left mouse button on the RECOLOR command button when you would like
- the picture to be erased and recolored. This command was included for two
- reasons. The first reason is that during the recoloring, redundant color data is
- removed from the "color command" list. The other reason is that young children
- like to watch the "computer" color the picture. The program may automatically
- execute this command if the color command list becomes too large to fit in
- memory. This should only happen if you color a lot of areas that have already
- been colored. If this should happen, the program will put a message on the
- screen before it begins the "recoloring process". After you click the Ok
- command button, the program will begin the "recoloring process". The only
- problem caused by recoloring is that the OOPS command will no longer restore an
- area's previous color (the area will be colored white). This is because the
- RECOLOR command has determined that the previous coloring of an area was
- redundant and has removed it from the "color command" list. The OOPS command
- will operate properly for any new "color commands" added to the list after the
- recoloring process has completed.
-
- PICTURE
-
- Click the left mouse button on the PICTURE command button when you would like to
- select a new picture. When you select the PICTURE command the Picture Selection
- Window will open to provide the command buttons that are needed to select a new
- picture. Twelve buttons will appear and each will contain the name of the file
-
- 8
- and a small version of the picture that it represents. Additional command
- buttons will appear to the right of the picture buttons that will allow you to
- scroll through the available pictures. The scrolling feature will not be needed
- with the Shareware version since there are only six pictures included. There
- are seven buttons that can be used to scroll the list. Describing them from
- left to right and from top to bottom as they appear on the screen, they are:
- Scroll Up one row; Go to the top of the list; Scroll Up one page; Go to the
- middle of the list; Scroll Down one page; Scroll Down one row; and Go to the
- bottom of the list.
-
- If the file that contains the small version of the picture cannot be found, then
- that picture's command button will only contain the name of the file.
-
- The files that have the extension .PCM are special compressed VGA Coloring Book
- files and are located in picture library files with the extension .GXL. The
- Shareware version of the program will only work with the six pictures that come
- with VCB. If you register VCB you will receive the commercial version which will
- allow you to load any .PCX picture file that you like.
-
- GET COLOR
-
- Click the left mouse button on the GET COLOR command button if you want to set
- the current color to be same as a color you have already used on your picture.
- When the GET COLOR command is invoked, the mouse cursor will change to an
- eyedropper shape. You will not be able to move the cursor outside of the
- picture area on the screen. To get a color from the screen, click the left
- mouse button on the area of the picture that contains the color you want to be
- the current color. When you click the mouse button on an area the mouse cursor
- will change back to the crayon shape and the current color and palette will
- change to be the same as the color of the area. If you invoke the GET COLOR
- command and then decide to leave the current color the same, you can press the
- ESC key to cancel the command.
-
- NAME
-
- Click the left mouse button on the NAME command target if you want to specify
- the name of the user. When the NAME command is selected, the Name Selection
- Window will open. This window provides five Name Selection command buttons that
- allow you to tell VCB who you are. Each of these buttons contains a name and a
- picture icon. Clicking one of these command buttons will change the Current
- User. You can customize these command buttons to contain your name and a
- picture icon that matches your appearance so that yours is easy to pick out. If
- you hold the ALT key while clicking the command button, you will be able to edit
- the text and select a new icon for the button. You can customize the name and
- icon for all five of the Name Selection command buttons.
-
- Each of the five users will have their own colored versions of the pictures
- saved.
-
- PRINT
-
- Click the left mouse button on the PRINT command button when you would like to
- print the current picture. You may print the picture in black and white or in
- color. When printed in black and white, only the outlines of the areas are
- printed (even if the picture is colored on the screen). These black and white
-
- 9
- pictures may then be colored with real crayons the old fashioned way. If your
- printer is capable of printing colors and is supported by VCB, then you may
- print the pictures in color. A black and white printer may also print the
- pictures in "color". In this case, the colors are approximated by patterns of
- black dots (or shades of gray).
-
- When you select the PRINT command, the Print Options Window will open to allow
- you to select the printing options. The command buttons available will be:
-
- PRINTER DRIVER: This button will open the Printer Driver Selection window. A
- list of printers will be presented. Clicking on the line that describes your
- printer will change the printer driver. Some printers have more than one driver
- each having different resolutions (dots / inch) or color support. Be sure to
- pick the correct driver. The list of printer drivers may be scrolled very
- similar to the picture selection window. Please refer to section on the PICTURE
- command for a description of the buttons available to scroll the list.
-
- PORT: This button allows you to set the port to which the printer data will be
- sent. Clicking the button will change the port to the next selection. Just
- keep clicking the button until your choice is displayed. The possible settings
- are: LPT1, LPT2, LPT3, COM1, COM2, and FILE.
-
- FILENAME: This button displays the name of the disk file to use when sending
- the printer data to disk. This button will only appear if the port is set to
- FILE. Clicking this button will allow you to edit the filename. The file will
- always be saved in the same directory and disk that contains the other VCB
- files.
-
- ORIENTATION: This button allows you to set the orientation to Portrait or
- Landscape. Just click the button until your choice is displayed.
-
- STYLE: This button allows you to set the style to Black and White or Colored.
- If you select Black and White then only the outlines will be printed (even if
- the picture is colored on the screen). Selecting Colored will allow the colored
- areas to print. Black and White printers will only print patterns of black dots
- (or shades of gray) for these areas.
-
- INTENSITY: This button allows you to set the intensity of printing. The two
- choices are FULL and HALF. Just click the button until your choice is
- displayed. When using printer drivers with a resolution of 150 dots/inch or
- more, use HALF intensity. If the image is purely black and white or you are
- printing in low resolution (75 dots/inch or less) then use FULL intensity. Try
- both to see which you prefer.
-
- PRINT: This button will start the printing process.
-
- CANCEL: This button will cancel the PRINT command and return you to coloring.
-
- Once the printing process has started, you may abort by pressing the ESC key.

- Printing Problem Tips
- Nothing Prints: 1 You are using the wrong printer port.
- 2 The printer cable is bad or not attached.
- 3 The computer's port or the printer's port is not working.
- 4 The printer is offline or not working.
- Try printing using a different software package, or try a
- print screen from DOS. If this does nothing then you know
- you have a hardware problem or you selected the wrong port.
- Try swapping the printer cable, or try a different printer.
- Garbage Prints: Double check that you are using the proper driver. If you
- are using the correct driver, then the printer is probably in
- an emulation mode. Determine which emulation your printer is
- using and then try that driver. Many new printers are
- capable of emulating several different printers.
- 1 For a 9 pin dot matrix, try an Epson 8/9 pin driver.
- 2 For a 24 pin dot matrix, try an Epson 24 pin driver.
- 3 For a laser printer without a PS in the model name, try an
- HP LaserJet driver.
- 4 For a laser printer with a PS in the model name, try a
- Postscript driver.
- Something Prints:1 The image prints but has extra line feeds.
- This problem occurs on older printers or on an IBM graphics
- printer. The extra line feed is caused by the printer
- either missing or not understanding the line spacing
- command. Make certain that the printer is on-line before
- printing, and if you are using an IBM printer, select an
- IBM driver.
- 2 The image prints but has the "jiggles".
- The "jiggles" are caused by selecting too high a resolution
- for your printer. Keep trying lower resolution drivers
- until the image is printed correctly.
- 3 The image prints on multiple pages.
- This could be caused by a hardware problem discussed above.
- A graphics data byte could be interpreted incorrectly as a
- form feed.
- Another reason is that you may have a laser printer with
- insufficient memory to print the entire image. Try using a
- lower resolution driver, or add memory to your printer.
-
- STOP
-
- Click the left mouse button on the STOP command target if you want to quit the
- program. When this command is selected, you will be asked "Do you really want
- to stop coloring?". If you want to exit the program and return to DOS then click
- the left mouse button on the YES command target. Click the left mouse button on
- the NO command target to abort the STOP command.
-
- NOTE: When you exit the program, setup data will be written to the file
- VCBSETUP.DAT.

- Many options can be selected such as difficulty, case of the letters, sound and
- music. The program plays a familiar children's song after a number of responses
- have been entered. The Shareware version has 50 word/picture flashcards, and
- the commercial version comes with over 250 more to make the total just over 300.
- A utility is provided that allows you to select which words should be used. This
- lets you tailor the program to your child's ability. The mouse cursor is a cute
- animated bee that the children can "fly" around the screen to make their
- selections. The words can be displayed in six languages (English, Spanish,
- French, German, Italian and Dutch). The program includes digitized speech for
- the words that can played through the Sound Blaster, Covox Speech Thing or the
- PC internal speaker if your machine is fast enough. The internal speaker
- playback may not work on all machines. The digitized speech is only in English.
-
- If you register VGA COLORING BOOK and WORD GALLERY together, you pay only $21.50
- for WORD GALLERY instead of the usual $24.00. If you would like a copy of the
- Shareware version of WORD GALLERY, then include an additional $2.00 (to cover
- materials and shipping only) with your VCB order.
-
- NOTE: Word Gallery is an MS-DOS program. It is not a Windows Application. It
- can, however, be run from Windows as a full screen application. The
- digitized speech will not work on the internal PC speaker when WG is run
- from Windows. It will work, however, with the Sound Blaster and Covox
- Speech Thing.
